Tiny House Tansu Stairs: The Solution To Storage Problems?

Whilst we all know that tiny house living will involve downsizing and embracing a life of minimalism, it is nearly impossible to live in a tiny house which only has a few storage cabinets. Even with the simplest of lifestyles, you will often find that you need just a bit extra storage – especially after going on a much-needed shopping trip. So what can you do?

The Japanese concept of Tansu (箪笥) revolves around having small boxes, chests and cabinets with built-in storage. Based on this, if you built a staircase out of small storage boxes/cabinets of varying sizes, you end up with tansu stairs. They would offer lots of storage, and a really practical way of getting up to your bedroom: a win-win.

Tiny Houses With Downstairs Bedrooms (& Lots Of Headroom!)

Tiny house living is great, it is a complete dream… until you realize that you will bang your head on the roof of your low loft most nights, and you start getting cramp due to climbing up and down a ladder several times a day (to access your loft bedroom)! Okay, maybe we are exaggerating slightly: but the reality of tiny house living is that a loft bedroom will be frustrating at times. Plus if you have any disabilities, you might not be able to access a bedroom in your loft space. Thankfully this does not mean that you are precluded from living in a tiny home.

Having a downstairs bedroom can solve a lot of problems. They are easy to access, they free up your loft for storage, they use up space downstairs which may otherwise be unused, and they give you much more headroom.

What Is The Best Insulation To Use In A Tiny House?

Insulation is a special layer of material which is put in-between voids (such as walls, ceilings/roof and the floor) that moderates the indoor temperature. Having a properly insulated tiny house is very important as it helps to provide comfortable living in both summer and winter. This is because quality insulation will prevent warm air escaping outside in winter (making you feel cold), but in the summer it will also stop overly hot air from outside coming into your tiny house (making you feel too warm).

We recommend 3.5” foam board insulation between your external walls and 3.5” fiberglass batts insulation between internal walls. Roof/attic insulation should be as thick as possible. What insulation you should use also varies depending on where in the country you live.

This article takes a detailed look at the different insulation types available for use in your tiny home. We also have a comprehensive (and free) guide on how to install insulation in the different parts of your house.

How Portable Are Tiny Houses?

The ‘tiny house dream’ is easy to picture: being able to easily ‘up sticks’ and move your tiny house anywhere in the country, and quickly being able to experience everything that your new destination has to offer. But is this dream really accurate? Are tiny houses on wheels (THOWs) genuinely portable, or are they mainly built this way to circumvent various planning rules?

Most small living enthusiasts actually prefer RVs for travelling, and instead build tiny houses on wheels to circumvent planning rules. However tiny houses are still portable; you just need to be more careful when transporting them.
